North Shropshire MP, Helen Morgan has welcomed further survey work at one of the region’s most dangerous crossroads and warned drivers to plan their journeys to minimise disruption.

Helen said confirmation that National Highways would carry out work from Monday (1st June) on the A483 at Llynclys was an “important step forward”.

The crossroads at Llynclys has long been recognised as a major accident blackspot with frequent collisions and for many years Helen has called for action to improve safety there and in nearby Pant.

The surveys will be used in the design of future improvements and will take place on weeknights until 12th June and the A483 between Llynclys and Llanymynech will be fully closed between 9pm and 6am.

Helen Morgan, MP for North Shropshire, said: “These survey works are an important step forward. People have been waiting far too long to see real progress at this dangerous junction, so it’s welcome news that work is now moving forward on a long-term solution.

“For years not only have I heard from residents, parents and local businesses about the fear and frustration caused by this junction, I’ve seen near misses first-hand.

“Far too many people have witnessed or been involved in serious collisions there, and that’s why this progress is so important.”

The surveys are a key early stage in developing proposals for improvements to the junction, including plans previously outlined by National Highways to replace the crossroads with a roundabout.

Helen added: “Local people have made it crystal clear that sticking-plaster fixes are not enough. We need a junction that is fundamentally safer, and a roundabout remains the best option.

“I know these overnight closures will cause inconvenience, but it is a price worth paying if it helps to deliver lasting safety improvements.”

National Highways confirmed that where it was safe to do so, access for emergency service vehicles would be maintained in emergency situations and access to frontages, as well as The White Lion and The Garden Lodge, will be maintained via an escort crew.

Helen added that she would continue pressing National Highways to move quickly from survey stage to delivery.
