Helen Morgan has joined forces with neighbouring MPs to demand action at a dangerous railway crossing on the Shropshire border.

The MPs for North Shropshire, Wrexham and Shrewsbury have written to Network Rail to express their alarm at the “serious and immediate risk of harm” posed by the Viaduct Footpath Crossing.

The crossing, just south of the viaduct between Gobowen and Chirk, was recently described as a “hot spot” for trespassing and fatalities by Network Rail and yet the transport body appears to have no plans to address the safety danger.

In a letter responding to proposals to install a new Wrexham to London service, Network Rail highlighted the fact that there have been 13 separate incidents at the crossing in recent weeks, including one featuring 36 children.

The number of incidents is expected to increase in the summer months when the crossing is busier.

Helen, Julia and Andrew are supporting the plan for a new service direct to London but want to see safety at the crossing improved regardless of whether the new service is approved or not.

Helen Morgan, Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire, said:

“This crossing clearly needs to be made safer, regardless of whether the new London service goes ahead or not.

“Network Rail must prioritise upgrading the crossing before any further incidents take place.”
