Helen recently wrote an opinion piece, for the LBC news website, which highlights the failings in maternity care across the UK and the devastating consequences many families have faced as a result.

Scandals such as the Shrewsbury and Telford maternity failures - where babies and mothers died - are evidence of a national crisis in safety, staffing, and infrastructure. Years of reports, reviews and recommendations have not delivered any meaningful change, leaving women, midwives, and doctors working in and with a system that fails them, and patients.

In the article, which you can read below, Helen sets out the Liberal Democrat plan to make the UK the safest place in the world to give birth.

Proposals include guaranteed one‑to‑one midwifery, improved clinical staffing round the clock, major upgrades to outdated maternity units, and national oversight through a dedicated maternity commissioner. Helen argues that this would be a bold but necessary transformation, which would ensure that no woman gives birth in unsafe conditions.
