Helen Morgan MP is “relieved but disappointed it took so long” after the Government announced a U-turn on winter fuel payments.

The Chancellor has announced changes to the thresholds for winter fuel payments in which anyone earning £35,000 or below will have their payment reinstated for this winter.

Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for the winter fuel cuts to be reversed since the decision was announced in July last year.

Helen Morgan, Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire, said, “Finally the Chancellor has seen sense and realised how disastrous her policy was.

“It’s frustrating that we had to campaign so hard for this change when the decision was so clearly flawed from the very beginning.

“Countless pensioners have been forced to choose between heating and eating while the Government buried its head in the sand. For their sake I am relieved but I am disappointed it has taken so long.

“I will now be studying the detail of this proposal to make sure those who need support are actually getting it.”
