North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan is urging constituents with Radio Teleswitch (RTS) meters to immediately contact their energy supplier, after stage two of the RTS meter phase-out began yesterday.

RTS meters, which are instructed by radio signals to switch between peak and off-peak energy rates, are being phased out due to the infrastructure being at the end of its operational life.

All those due to be affected by stage two of the phase out, which started on Monday 11th August, should have already been contacted by their energy provider to notify them of the change.

Constituents who have not received an upgrade to their RTS meter may experience disruption to their heating and/or hot water or be charged higher rates of tariffs when their RTS meter fails to switch between the different rates.

Ofgem, the UK government’s regulator for the energy sector, has informed Helen that there may be up to 60 properties in North Shropshire affected.

Anyone unsure about whether they still have an RTS meter is being encouraged to contact their energy provider as soon as possible.

Helen Morgan, Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire, said, “It’s important that anybody who is worried about how the RTS meter phase-out may affect them, or someone they care for, contacts their energy provider as soon as possible.

“Although I’m glad that energy providers have been proactively contacting constituents, it is crucial that nobody is left to fall through the cracks and rack up extra bills or lose amenities.

“If anybody in North Shropshire is struggling to get the support they need then they are welcome to contact me and I will do my best to help.”
