Helen joins call to support ‘WASPI’ women
Helen Morgan MP has joined more than 100 others from across Parliament in demanding the Government bring forward compensation proposals for women affected by pension changes.
Helen has signed a cross-party letter urging ministers to heed the advice of the Financial Ombudsman and compensate women born in the 1950s.
The letter highlights how previous changes to State Pension age were introduced without adequate notice, leaving many currently facing hardship and debt.
Helen said those affected, represented by the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign, needed the Government to “finally do the right thing”.
Helen said: “Women born in the 1950s have suffered a clear injustice through no fault of their own, yet the Government continues to ignore the Ombudsman’s recommendations.
“Liberal Democrats have long pushed for fair compensation, and I am urging the Government to finally do the right thing for WASPI women in North Shropshire and across the country.”
Women born on or after 6th April 1950 to 5th April 1960 saw rapid and steep increases to their State Pension age, but this happened without adequate notice.
In March 2024, the Ombudsman found this to be maladministration and instructed Parliament to deliver compensation. It is thought around 3.6 million women are affected.
Helen added: “Successive Governments have repeatedly let down WASPI women and now this Government is compounding that injustice by dragging its feet, despite clear and independent recommendations for fair compensation.”
