Helen Morgan MP is urging residents to get behind local businesses after finalists were announced in the Countryside Alliance Awards, dubbed the ‘Rural Oscars’.

Helen said she was “delighted” that two village shops and a pub were put forward to the final round of the annual awards, which aim to recognise UK food and farming, enterprise and heritage.

The Castle Inn at Bletchley was joined in the Midlands finalists shortlist by Jackie’s village shop in Prees and Cockshutt Community Shop.

Now in their 19th year, the competition is driven by public nomination and Helen called on constituents to vote in support of the local businesses.

She said: “These ‘Rural Oscars’ received thousands of nominations this year so I’m delighted that three North Shropshire businesses have made it through.

“I know from personal experience how much difference these businesses make to their local communities, regularly going the extra mile to help out customers.

“I hope everyone gives them the backing they deserve and makes sure to vote online.

“With enough support they could not only triumph in the Midlands but bring back another national award to North Shropshire.”

Countryside Alliance Awards Director, Sarah Lee, said: “We have been overwhelmed by nominations this year. The secret to the Rural Oscars’ popularity is that they honour the people involved in these businesses and not just their produce or services.

“They exist to sing the praises of those who work hard to keep our communities and rural economy ticking, but don’t seek the spotlight. Our local produce is second to none and there are many community heroes and businesses worthy of national recognition.”

Residents have until 6th April to cast their vote, and they can do so by going online to: www.countryside-alliance.org/awards

Regional winners will then progress to the grand final at the House of Lords in July.
