British Farmers Deserve Better says Helen

Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire, Helen Morgan, is calling on the Government to stop neglecting Britain’s farmers and take urgent action to safeguard the future of rural communities.

The call comes as the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) marked Back British Farming Day on Wednesday (10th September), highlighting the importance of agriculture to communities the economy.

The MP met with the NFU’s Midlands Regional Director, Rob Newberry, and others at the organisation’s London headquarters and showed her support for the cause, now in its tenth year, by joining other MPs in wearing a wheatsheaf pin badge in Parliament during Prime Ministers Questions.

The day of action comes after the Government signed off on up to 13,000 tonnes of tariff-free US beef imports with President Trump, which threatens to undercut British producers with cheaper and lower-standard beef imports. At the same time, the Government has axed long-standing funding for the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC), which have supported over 23,000 young people for more than 30 years.

Helen has consistently stood up for farmers and said that farming in North Shropshire was the “backbone” of the rural economy in the constituency. She joined Liberal Democrat colleagues in demanding a full package of support including scrapping the Family Farm Tax, restoring funding for Young Farmers’ Clubs, and introducing mandatory country-of-origin labelling on all beef products.

Helen Morgan MP said: “British farmers such as those in North Shropshire put food on our tables and are the backbone of our economy, but this Government keeps selling them short. Our rural communities have already been struck by the Chancellor’s Family Farms Tax which affects nearly 300 farms in North Shropshire.

“From unfair taxes to slashing support for young farmers, ministers are making it harder for the next generation to survive in agriculture.”

The NFU event follows a ‘Buy Shropshire, Back Britain’ campaign launched by the MP earlier this year in the wake of Donald Trump’s global tariffs.

As part of that, the MP demanded the Government ensure the Groceries Code Adjudicator gave farmers a fair price, so as not to be undermined by a damaging US trade deal, alongside reform of the business rates system to save local high streets.

Helen Morgan MP added: “British farmers deserve better. That’s why I’m supporting Back British Farming Day to demand proper backing, fairer funding and clear labelling so shoppers can support British produce. It’s time to stop neglecting our farmers and start standing up for them.”
