Helen Morgan votes for windfall tax to help with cost of living

18th May 2022

North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan voted in Parliament to bring in a windfall tax on energy firms to help fund support for people struggling with spiralling bills.

Earlier this month it was revealed that BP’s profits had more than doubled to £5 billion in the first three months of this year. Meanwhile Shell made over £7 billion during the same time period.

It was also announced today that prices are rising at their fastest rate for 40 years, with inflation reaching 9%.

However the motion to introduce a windfall tax on oil and gas companies was defeated by 310 votes to 248, with not a single Conservative MP voting in favour of it.

Speaking after the vote, Helen said: “Every day I’m contacted by families in Shropshire struggling to put food on the table and pay the bills and yet Conservative MPs have again voted against helping them.

“It’s not fair that oil and gas giants are making record profits while people at home try to cope with prices rising at their fastest rate for 40 years.

“The Government is in chaos and failing to deal with the cost-of-living crisis.

“That’s why the Chancellor must swallow his pride and announce a U-turn on the windfall tax today.”
