Helen Morgan MP calls for rethink on expected St Martins GP surgery closure

15th March 2022

Helen Morgan, Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire, has today written to the North Wales Community Health Council (CHC), who are set to make recommendations on the proposed closure of St Martins GP surgery.

In the letter to the CHC, Helen Morgan highlights that the closure will not help to meet the needs of the local community, and has asked to meet with representatives before a final decision is made.

Commenting Helen said: “Residents of North Shropshire already have a terrible deal when it comes to accessing ambulances and hospitals. Now residents of St Martins are set to find it become more difficult to even see a doctor in their own community, with the local GP surgery in St Martins expected to shut its doors”

“At a time when the cost-of-living crisis is already hitting residents hard, the closure of St Martins GP surgery will mean some residents will inevitably question whether or not the additional travel costs make it worthwhile going to see a GP in person. This decision would remove healthcare from the heart of our communities, and will only result in poorer health outcomes for residents.”

“I was elected to stand up for the people of North Shropshire and fight for better health services and will continue to do so. As such, I've written to the Community Health Council and asked them to meet with me before a final decision is taken.”
